A month ago, I applied for a graphic designing internship in London
As of everyone's dream, I want to sustain my own living through my passion
It sounds like a wonderful thing isn't it?
To do what you like for a living, and get the pay that you deserve
The last part of that sentence never occurred to me until today.
I had that interview today
and I got the job
It's a part-time role up to Summer, then it becomes a full-time summer internship role
Showcasing the Spanish and Latin American art to the British community
Sounds like a dream come true
but here comes a deal breaker
It's an unpaid internship
After a long day of tug-of-war
with a lot of help from KY
I finally understood that it's because they are underfunded, not because I don't have the talent
I finally believed that my work has value and I won't be happy if I do design work for free again
especially since I start to value and charge my designs for a while now
There is a fine line between exploitation and volunteering
while many will argue that the fine line is just the state of mind
it's merely "which side are you on?"
Sure, if I were younger, I would take it up without a blink of an eye
This sounds like an opportunity of a lifetime for me why would I give up a chance to learn
just because it's an unpaid opportunity?
While the debate goes on and on in monologue
it's worth to point out that I still do have ongoing applications that probably pays
and I don't have the capacity to help out yet
Until I get myself a rich 太太 life
and I don't care a damn about learning a new skill to earn that extra buck
I can't afford to be free
But it truly sucks and has affected me for half a day
to know that you're so close to your dreams
which is now stampeded upon
goodbye dream job
